I wanted to let you know, that we are constantly working to come up with new ways to provide our members and the public with content related to Jackson county history.  These are the latest!

Museum Software

The board recently added a new museum cataloging software to the tools we use for managing all of our artifacts, pictures, library books, and other holdings.  This software will allow us to keep track of everything donated or loaned to us and will let us manage items we loan to others.  In fact, our first items added are items we have loaned from our collection to the Murphysboro Apple Festival to exhibit at this year's Apple Festival.  Check out the Links page on our website, you can see the new software in action by clicking the Apple Festival Exhibit Link.

Ventilator Indexes

We have added new items to the Members Only page.  All of our past Ventilator Newsletters, dating back to the first one published in 1972 are now online for our members to read.  The first index item is the subject index, it lists every story in the volume so you can search for a subject and narrow the list to past Ventilators that addressed that subject.  Once you've narrowed down the volume, month, and year you can use the second index, the Archive list to read the actual PDF version of that Ventilator Newsletter.  Give it a try, I am really enjoying reading some of the old stories from long past volumes and I would bet you will too.  This link will take you to a video to give you a brief overview of how to use the new indexes How To Use

Tri-State Tornado Centennial

The board and our volunteers are planning some pretty big things for the 100-year anniversary of this major event in Jackson County.  From Live Action events, Museum Exhibits, Movies, Book Publications, and Historic Markers to a Memorial Wall commemorating those who lost their lives in the cyclone, we are working hard to be more visible to the community and provide interesting historical programs to everyone.  Watch your email for more information about some of these exciting opportunities for our members!

Everything we do at JCHS is to promote our Jackson County history and we could not do it without YOU!!  Thank you for supporting our society through your generous contributions and membership in the society.  As a member of our society, you have the prerogative of voting at our annual meeting. This year we have a Guest Speaker on the history of corn in Illinois prior to the annual meeting.  Our plan is to continue to do this in years to come. Please think about coming to the program and staying afterward for our annual meeting, you can get your free tickets by clicking here.  We would like for all our members to know our volunteers and to get involved with the society.  Without each of you, we would not have made these 50 years!!

See you soon,

Scott Johnson, Board President
